about

This song is about loneliness and misery, ice and frost over the paddocks at dawn. Driving through stark granite boulder country in conversation with the rocks. The unfamiliar sounds of a pine forest at night. A clockwork person, winding down. Originally titled h’orolger for its carousel structure, the composition hung around for years, not in the in-box but not exactly in the out-box either, until one night alone in the forest recording Life of the Inhabitant the lyrics popped into my head complete. Tom overdubbed his original piano on Jame’s old upright, prepared with linen tea-towels for texture.

The longer I dream of and the more detail I invent for my ideal partners the uncannier they become. Un-nervingly, once invested with tastes, attitudes, appearances and back stories they develop speech. Independent, they hover around, speaking to me via my own voice and desire for love, becoming mythical- real and unreal simultaneously. The more detailed and specific they become via my interior process, the less possible it becomes that they could ever exist in the outside world. They can’t bear scrutiny. It causes them to melt. They live in a world of their own.

lyrics

I made you up to be with me
You came to life so naturally
And though you used my eyes to see
You had such canny vision

I felt you caused my mind to cleave in two
And so I made believe that you
Were never going to leave
And that I’d meet you soon

When will you be real?
I love your weird ideas
Sometimes we do disagree
Even though you’re made of me
You have a personality
But no materiality
I am walking all alone
Toward you though the ice and snow
But I know you won’t be home

You’re in a world of your own
You never answer the phone
You don’t check your mail
You’re unavailable
I still read your part while my heart turns to stone
You’re in a world of your own

You’ll never be at the show
Or afterwards at the disco
You don’t exist
You’re irresistible
The perfect companion that I’ll never know
You’re in a world of your own

about

time for dreams Melbourne, Australia

Amanda Roff & Tom Carlyon are Time For Dreams, an Australian duo making bleak, smoky, dehydrated bad-dream pop. Their music is at once stark and lush, vivid and hazy.
Their work has a strong fantasy aspect and speaks to the existence of multiple realities. A perfect soundtrack for the end of the world.
